HOW IT STARTED

My name is Joost Dijkstra, founder of Bald&. Having worked for more than 20 years in large companies, in the summer of 2024 Bald& started officially. Yet, as you will read below, the story of Bald& goes back a lot longer.

Supporting me as Finance Guru is my wife, Anne Dijkstra. An accomplished entrepreneur herself and with a track record in Finance, we make a great team.

WHY BALD&

The story of Bald& looking back, in reality already started in my twenties , dare I say more that twenty years ago!, when male pattern baldness started to show. As with many young men, coming to terms with the fact that balding was inevitable, wasn't easy for me. Yet around my thirties I decided to shave my head and discovered that I should have done it much earlier.

Finding good products that are a great fit for your bald head however proved to be difficult. Most skincare products were not a good fit; most of them too greasy or to 'harsh' causing an even shinier head. And most hair products, like shampoo were, well, uhm unsurprisingly made for people with hair, even the ones claiming to be beneficial for the scalp.

That's why I decided to develop a full range of natural skincare routine products, specifically tailored to the needs of your bald head. After all, many of us have a good skincare regime for our face, so why neglect your scalp?

BALD& YOUR SCALP

At Bald& we believe that being bald is about being carefree, not about being free from good care.

The skin on your head is unique and has differences vs the skin on the rest of your body

The biggest difference between scalp and facial skin is that the scalp has more sebaceous glands (ie. lipid and sweat) than any other part of the body. Moreover, influenced by the hormone DHT, when Balding, these glands become more active, resulting in that infamous greasy & shiny head.
In addition, the scalp has a Lower Barrier Function, meaning it’s not very proficient at maintaining and replenishing hydration compared to skin found in other places. And even more harmful, your scalp is not very well protected from external influences such as UV-radiation coming from the sun, but also cold & wind on colder days. If you’ve got hair that will protect you from the harsh effects of external elements, why would you need a high barrier function, right?
